Background
The National Coding System (NCS) is Myanmar’s official coding for all the country’s administrative units. It is based on the eight (8) hierarchical levels of political units of the country, namely, the administrative region/state/Union territory, the district, the self-administered zone/division, the township, the town/city, the ward, the village tract and the village.All departments, ministries, and stakeholders shall use the NCS as the standard codes for administrative units. It is the backbone for interoperability. It allows linkages and exchange of data from different data sources and data providers. The NCS has been developed and agreed by the National Coding System Technical Working Group composed of:- General Administration Department (chair), Ministry of Office of the Union Government
- Central Statistical Organisation, Ministry of Planning and Finance
- Department of Agricultural Land Management and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation
- Department of Basic Education, Ministry of Education
- Department of Population, Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population
- Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health and Sports
- Department of Rural Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation
- Survey Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation
- Forestry Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation
- The Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU) and OneMap Myanmar provided technical support to the initiative.
NCS Structure
National Coding System has eight administrative levels as follow- Union Territory, State/Region

Code format
Code format: GALLdddddd
GA = brand code for “General Administration Department” to distinguish from any other codes produced by other organizations
LL = Admin level 10 to 70
dddddd = six unique digits
